Incorporating brands such as Peugeot, Citroën, DS and Opel; Groupe PSA’s Turkey President Cournuaille came together with the Torbalı Camber of Commerce President Olgun. Cornuaille has announced that they have begun to invest Opel’s factory in the district to turn it to Groupe PSA’s strategic spare parts distribution warehouse in Europe.

The Opel factory in Torbalı, which became operational in 1990 and closed in 2000, will become a strategic spare parts distribution center for all Groupe PSA brands. Incorporating brands such as Peugeot, Citroën, DS and Opel; Groupe PSA’s Turkey President Olivier Cournuaille had a meeting with Torbalı Chamber of Commerce (TCC) President Abdulvahap Olgun, the day before. Stating that they are delighted to see Opel is back in operation in the district, TCC President Olgun said “We have a very convenient logistics with the highway and railroads connections in Torbalı. We are 15 minutes away from the airport and 40 kilometers away from the port. We have high speed train lines on top of railroads connection. We have connection to Ankara-İzmir fast train line. We will have connection to İstanbul-İzmir highway. We are 40 kilometers away to Kemalpaşa Logistics Centre. After Opel came to our district in 1989, Torbalı started to become an industrialized city. We’ve welcomed Mr. Cournuaille in the Chamber of Commerce and we’d like to thank them again for starting to operate in Torbalı once again.”

“WE BELIEVE IN TURKISH ECONOMY AND MARKET”

After thanking Torbalı Chamber of Commerce President Olgun for their interest in the investment, Groupe PSA Turkey President Olivier Cornuaille; stated that they’ve begun investing in Opel’s land in Torbalı to turn it into Groupe PSA’s strategic spare parts distribution center in Europe. Cornuaille said “Groupe PSA, believes in Turkish economy and its market. We will continue to invest and grow with the brands we own; Peugeot, Citroën, Opel and DS. With our spare parts distribution center project that we plan to implement on Opel’s land in Torbalı, we confirm how strong we stand with our point of view. We’ve become Torbalı and we love this district. We’ve made good deals in the past and Torbalı will become one of Groupe PSA’s important centers in the new term.” After informing about Torbalı’s economic potential and the works of Chamber of Commerce, Olgun has presented Olivier Cornuaille Torbalı Olive Cologne and “Attractive City Torbalı” plaque.

OPEL’S HISTORY IN TORBALI

Opel Turkey, has founded in Torbalı with 40 million mark and %100 foreign capital in 1989. In 1990, when the facility came into operation, Opel assembled 1.156 cars. After a year the count went up to 6 thousand. In 1992 9 thousand, and when we came to year 1993 the facility was able to assemble 12 thousand cars per year. This situation lasted until 1993. After 1993 Opel Turkey, started to import. The first year 6 thousand 630 cars were imported. A year after the economic crisis has affected Opel. The assembly count in Torbalı plant decreased by half compared to last year with 6 thousand 626 cars. Import count decreased by one third, to 1.802 cars. In 1995 the counts were the same. The factory which had 10 thousand yearly production capacity could not resist to economic crisis and closed in 2000.
